Birthday Party for Laura/X-23

It's a pretty low-key party, all things considered, and not significantly different than the one Parker or Meg would have thrown in a dorm room for a friend at home, not-exactly-traditional menu not withstanding.

There's music, low enough to talk over (and maybe with a little more folk in the mix than one expects to find a party). Balloons and streamers in purple and blue and red. A place to leave presents. People to meet or catch up with.

And, most importantly, a chance to wish X-23 (or Laura) a very happy birthday.

X is still not very good at mingling. She tries, but give her enough time and she will drift toward the fringes of the crowd, stance shifting so that it looks like she's on duty.

Then she remembers, and moves back toward the center of things.

Maybe it gets easier with practice.

She'll find out.

Castiel also automatically finds himself drifting toward the fringes.

He is not used to parties. This is the first one he has been invited too.

So it's only a matter of time until he finds himself standing on the sidelines with the guest of honor.

"Hello," he says with a formal nod.

"Many happy returns."

Alanna would never want to admit that sometimes practice doesn't help or that there's something she can't overcome, but she's still not good at parties, and she's had an awful lot of practice.

She's parked herself near enough to the door for comfort but not so near as to seem anxious to leave. Hopefully X will drift her way.

Ingress has on a party dress today in honor of Laura's birthday. It's pretty fancy, because hey, why not wear a fancy dress for a friend's birthday party?

Elle does not try to drift toward the edges. But at the same time, drifting seems to be what she's doing - like she doesn't know where to go, she moves around like a car in the wrong lane.

Eventually, though, she sees X, and comes over to her.

She can say 'Happy Birthday,' but not in the way she would mean to, here. It doesn't seem like something you say to X, even at a birthday party.

So instead, looking at the decorations, she asks, "Do you like them?"

(There's no judgment in it - it's something to say.)

Parties really aren't Liz's scene. On a first glance, she spots a couple of familiar faces here and there -- Parker, Elle, Cal, and others -- but nobody she knows well enough to strike up conversation with.

No one, that is, except the birthday girl herself.

"So," says Liz by way of greeting as she comes up alongside Laura, and she smiles, "how is it having a birthday and a party?"

Helen is staying on the edges, too, switching between looking uncomfortable and affronted at the mingling going on.

It's not loud, or anything. She just doesn't know anyone. Except Jamie, who is enjoying himself rather too much with the Creema di Leema they brought, and Joris--who is deep in discussion with someone on the other side of the room.

And X-23. Which is why she tilts her head at her slightly, sideways. "May Uquar shed light on your path," she says, voice a little stiff. She's smiling, though.

Raguel's another who skulks in a corner uncomfortably once he arrives, but getting there is a big step for him. Socializing comes later.

Zoe is thrilled that she finally found other doors to Milliways and was able to attend the party without dealing with her father.

"Happy birthday, X," says Bela, newly arrived to the party. She might seem a little subdued; she hasn't gone home yet, and she knows she really, really needs to. But she has a friend's birthday to attend, and she's not risking not getting a door back.

She smiles, though, because there are plenty of people here, and that means a lot, she's discovered. "It looks like you're having a great party."

X, at least, is easy enough to find in this milling of humans, which is why the Gorgon (wearing glasses as well as her normal flowing skirts and bangles) makes her way over.

Cass is not mingling. Cass is staying in shadowy corners out of the way. There are a lot of people here, and they are loud. So it's easier that way.

Though every so often she has to sneak over to the food to snag something with a lot of sugar in it.

Cal looks tired, and a little ragged around the edges, but his smile is genuine enough. A party is a welcome distraction from things.

Wherever she's standing, it's not like she can escape for long. At a certain point in the evening, someone is standing very close behind her, nodding and maybe giving a small huff of approval.

"Well, at least someone you know knows how to throw a good shindig. Not bad."

"Aloha," croaks a voice from approximate knee height. Several napkins and nearly half an hour after his initial attack on the buffet table, Stitch is looking almost presentable.

It seems to be going well, in Meg's opinion.

Which means she can relax a little and talk to people.

(Though she's still going to occasionally look over to make sure they aren't running low on garlic bread.)

Food and Drink

Over against the wall is a table covered with a long purple cloth. There's a giant bowl of spaghetti (with a smaller bowl of meatballs, for those who want them), and a salad, and a tray of garlic bread.

There's also a large loaf of garlic bread, which has 18 red candles stuck in it and which has "Happy Birthday, Laura" spelled out on top of it in basil and oregano.

And one end of the table has root beer, vanilla ice cream, and fancy soda shop glasses, for the making of floats. (Other sodas and a pitcher of lemonade are off to one side, for people who aren't as fond of root beer floats as the guest of honor is.)

Okay, so it's not the most traditional of birthday party fare. Is that really a surprise?

Snuffle. Snuffle snuffle snuffle.

"Oooooooooh!"

A small blue form appears, releasing its hold on the ceiling to drop solidly on to the buffet table. Stitch takes a moment to survey the edible landscape before seizing two purple plastic knives and setting to work on the spaghetti bowl. It takes a few false starts and some serious trial and error but shortly thereafter the beginnings of a knitted spaghetti scarf are well under way.

There's a small table in the corner with rather a lot of purple balloons tied to it, and a few wrapped gifts on top. If you brought a gift, this is the place to drop it off.

There's a small box, wrapped very neatly in dark blue paper and tied up with a white ribbon. Inside is a pair of fingerless gloves, knit out of a soft yarn in the deepest darkest red that can still be considered red, and a copy of Anne of Green Gables.

The card reads simply, "To Laura, with many, many wishes for a happy birthday. Your friend, Meg."
