Birthday Party for Laura/X-23

It's a pretty low-key party, all things considered, and not significantly different than the one Parker or Meg would have thrown in a dorm room for a friend at home, not-exactly-traditional menu not withstanding.

There's music, low enough to talk over (and maybe with a little more folk in the mix than one expects to find a party). Balloons and streamers in purple and blue and red. A place to leave presents. People to meet or catch up with.

And, most importantly, a chance to wish X-23 (or Laura) a very happy birthday.

"Me?"

Jamie shakes his head at her.

"That's rich, coming from Miss 'I'm Right and You're Wrong Whatever The Actual Facts'."

It's said without malice; they've had near-identical arguments many times before.

"Facts you make up don't count as facts, Jamie!" Helen counters, with some annoyance.

They've had near-identical arguments many times before, but that doesn't stop it from being true!

(And yes, facts that Jamie knows and fails to bring up until after the fact count as being made up in Helen's book. It is cheating.)

"I don't make them up."

Most of the time.

"I have had about a hundred worlds to learn things on, remember? That's only, oh, ninety more than you . . ."

"And yet you still can't read a book right," Helen remarks, sadly.

And spears another meatball.

Jamie is completely unrepentant.

"'Can't' and 'don't want to' are two different things."

"I've learned a lot more out of a book than you'll ever learn in one," Jamie says calmly, and takes a crunchy bite out of his garlic bread.

That is, perhaps, more of a heresy than Helen can handle.

Her mouth pulls tight and her jaw squares, chin lifting as she looks away into the crowd. If Jamie's going to be stupid, she's certainly not going to play to it.

Jamie continues to eat his garlic bread, with a maddening lack of perturbation.

"No, she'll say I'm still healing and I need to regain my strength," Jamie says - with his mouthful once again - and taps his right arm meaningfully.

"...overeating will not fix your arm," Helen tells him, somewhat condescendingly.

And reaches around to grab a piece of garlic bread herself.

What, she hasn't tried to yet!

"Starving won't help it either," Jamie retorts.

And just looks smug when she grabs a piece. See, Helen, it's alluring!

"You're hardly starved by now."

She inspects the piece, takes a manageable bite of it, and chews it thoughtfully.
