Birthday Party for Laura/X-23

It's a pretty low-key party, all things considered, and not significantly different than the one Parker or Meg would have thrown in a dorm room for a friend at home, not-exactly-traditional menu not withstanding.

There's music, low enough to talk over (and maybe with a little more folk in the mix than one expects to find a party). Balloons and streamers in purple and blue and red. A place to leave presents. People to meet or catch up with.

And, most importantly, a chance to wish X-23 (or Laura) a very happy birthday.

X is silent for a moment.

Smell tends to be more straightforward for her.

Plus exact locations are not difficult, not with a crowd this small.

"Meg is there. By the food. Her hair is red."

Plus she's Canadian.

"Parker is over there, too. She is blonde."

Cal glances across the way and spots both girls, making a note of their appearances.

"Okay," he says. "Thanks. Got quite a few people here. I had no idea you had so many friends."

He's pleased about this. X should have lots of friends.

"Yes," X says. She's maybe a little hesitant. That's because she is not sure what to say.

"I like having friends."

Even when she worries.

Cal smiles.

"It's great, isn't it?" he asks. "I didn't - really have any before Milliways. None I could really trust, anyway."

He has a feeling X can identify with that.

"I had teammates," X offers.

"Some of them are friends now."

And some of them are--still teammates. It's not bad.

"It is easier here."

Cal nods.

"People are nicer here," he says. Then,

"Well. Nicer than on my world, anyway. And easier to talk to."

And a lot more interesting. Cal used to get so damn bored socializing back home, but he doesn't think he's had a single boring conversation in Milliways.

X considers this. Carefully.

"Sometimes. My neighbors are nice. At home."

Beat.

"They are not afraid of me."

To be fair, X is not sure if they know what she can do, but--it would be difficult for Mr. Simmons to remain clueless. At the very least.

"Good," Cal says. "They don't need to be."

Just because someone can do something, doesn't mean she will.

Then again, Cal has some experience with being in the presence of people who know how and are ready to use the weapons at their disposal. He knows they're also ready not to.

"No," X says, very simply.

"They do not."

Just like the people here don't need to be afraid of her.

Unless she wants them to be. But that is not likely to happen.

Even when people break the rules.

(Unless they hurt her friends.)

"They're lucky to have you," Cal says. "You talk to them much?"

Cal's heard of neighborhoods where people get to know each other beyond just the occasional party, but his was never like that.

"Some of them," X says.

"Mr. Simmons knows a lot of people. He is my landlord."

Beat.

"Duo said it is good to talk to them. My neighbors."

"I never really got to know any of mine," Cal says. "It's a good way to make friends, though."

Maybe that can be something else he does differently when he chooses a new world.

X nods.

"I am learning things, too. Like how to repair the roof. When it leaks."

And basic plumbing.

Mostly because X can fit in some tricky spaces that Mr. Simmons can't anymore.

"Sounds useful," Cal says. "We hired people for stuff like that."

Yet more things he doesn't know. It doesn't particularly bother him, though, because in this case, he's pretty sure most people hire others for stuff like that.
