noteful: (z balloons for Laura's birthday)

Birthday Party for Laura/X-23

It's a pretty low-key party, all things considered, and not significantly different than the one Parker or Meg would have thrown in a dorm room for a friend at home, not-exactly-traditional menu not withstanding.

There's music, low enough to talk over (and maybe with a little more folk in the mix than one expects to find a party). Balloons and streamers in purple and blue and red. A place to leave presents. People to meet or catch up with.

And, most importantly, a chance to wish X-23 (or Laura) a very happy birthday.

X eventually makes her way over to Cass' shadowy corner.

It is quieter than standing near the food.

She brings a root beer float with her, though. Or two.

It's X's birthday, but Cass beams like it's hers. She has the most thoughtful friends!

She waves easily before reaching out to take the cup and take a loooong sip.

X doesn't quite smile, but the set of her face and shoulders relaxes.

It is close enough, right?

And she takes a matching sip of her float.

For Cass? More than close enough. She waves to take in the room.

X has a lot of friends!

X flicks a quick glance around, then nods.

She might also bump against Cass' shoulder.

Carefully.

No one wants their float to spill.

[identity profile] seewhatyoumean.livejournal.com 2009-03-02 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Cass bumps right back. Then she holds up an empty hand, the one not occupied with the float. She didn't bring anything.

Hopefully X won't think she's a bad friend for that.

[personal profile] cutting_edgex23 2009-03-02 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
X shrugs, one-shouldered and quick, and holds up her own empty hand.

She is not a gift-giver, either.

Maybe one day she'll learn.

Maybe.

[identity profile] seewhatyoumean.livejournal.com 2009-03-02 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
It's over-rated, really. Cass will take a good friend over a gift any day of the week. Her smile says so too.

She lifts her glass in a sort of toast.

That's what you do, right?

[personal profile] cutting_edgex23 2009-03-02 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
X stays as she is for a second, studying the gesture.

Then, even more carefully than before, she clinks her glass against Cass'.

That is how it goes, right?

[identity profile] seewhatyoumean.livejournal.com 2009-03-02 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
Cass certainly thinks so. If it's something else she doesn't know. So she just takes another sip of her delicious drink.

She pauses to cock her head. Does X feel old and stuff now?

[personal profile] cutting_edgex23 2009-03-02 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
X tilts her head in return, to a much slighter angle.

Then she shrugs.

Not really?

It will be a long time before X feels old.

Cass nods in approval. Young at heart! And... stuff...

She sweeps her eyes across the room. X has many friends, and they are a very... interesting group.

X's gaze flicks across the crowd, too.

Then she tilts her head a little.

There are people Cass has not met?

Re: Hang out with X-23

[identity profile] seewhatyoumean.livejournal.com 2009-03-02 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
Cass dips her head slightly. She doesn't meet a lot of people. She's not very good at it, after all.

She may even be worse than X.

Re: Hang out with X-23

[personal profile] cutting_edgex23 2009-03-02 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
X shrugs a little.

She is not good at introductions, either.

It is okay.

Re: Hang out with X-23

[identity profile] seewhatyoumean.livejournal.com 2009-03-02 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Somehow Cass will find a way to survive the lack of introductions. In fact, the look on her face suggests that hanging out with a friend is good enough for her.

Introductions are for the sociable anyway.

[personal profile] cutting_edgex23 2009-03-02 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
What about introductions that start with a punch to the face?

Sometimes those are interesting.

But X does not look like she's about to punch anyone.

She may go for a refill on her root beer float soon, though.

Re: Hang out with X-23

[identity profile] seewhatyoumean.livejournal.com 2009-03-02 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Well, sugar can provide a decent introduction. At least for Cass. Punches work too, of course, but they're really for a different group of people.

Cass eyes her own float critically before flicking her eyes over to X's. It is about that time, isn't it?

X nods, very slightly, then moves away from the shadowy corner.

They will triumph over the powers of . . . the buffet table.

Won't they?

Re: Hang out with X-23

[identity profile] seewhatyoumean.livejournal.com 2009-03-02 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
The two of them together could take out a small army. Or even a large army for that matter, if one were honest. One little buffet table shouldn't pose a challenge to them.

Or so one might think. But that only holds true if someone hasn't drunk all of the rootbeer before they arrive.

Oh noes! WHAT WILL THEY DO?

X flicks a glance around the room, then begins a covert mission down to the bar to get more.

She will be back.

Cass should cover for her, in the meantime.

[identity profile] seewhatyoumean.livejournal.com 2009-03-02 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
This is an excellent division of labor. After all, there is no master of espionage and deception like Cass.

Right?

Re: Hang out with X-23

[personal profile] cutting_edgex23 2009-03-02 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Right.

X is much better at breaking things. Messily.

But she is careful with the root beer.

She even returns with several bottles.

And a waitrat with several more.

Clearly she is queen of stealth.

Re: Hang out with X-23

[identity profile] seewhatyoumean.livejournal.com 2009-03-02 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
Cass didn't even notice she was gone! Or... something.

But the rootbeer (and the returning friend) definitely gets a grin. Cass has cleverly snagged a quart of icecream in order to ensure that a second trip doesn't have to be made. Because that would be very sad.

Cass has skills.

And X keeps herself busy setting out more root beer for a second.

Then she takes a couple empty glasses and two bottles of root beer, and heads over to join Cass.
