Birthday Party for Laura/X-23

It's a pretty low-key party, all things considered, and not significantly different than the one Parker or Meg would have thrown in a dorm room for a friend at home, not-exactly-traditional menu not withstanding.

There's music, low enough to talk over (and maybe with a little more folk in the mix than one expects to find a party). Balloons and streamers in purple and blue and red. A place to leave presents. People to meet or catch up with.

And, most importantly, a chance to wish X-23 (or Laura) a very happy birthday.

"Yeah."

"I think it's different from being a bird, though."

There's no wings, first of all.

"You would be smaller."

Beat.

"As a bird."

X is not sure she would like that.

"It was a big one."

And Elle's pretty used to being small, anyway.

"Oh."

Beat.

"That is good."

This pause is longer.

"I do not know any bird shapeshifters. At home."

"It doesn't happen where I'm from, either."

Uh.

We'll assume.

"I - think it's like magic?"

X frowns a little.

"Maybe."

Beat.

"I am not good at magic."

"I don't do it."

Pause. "But it was like - when Tom turned something into a bird. It just happened."

Of course, Tom needed a wand. She's not sure how relevant that is.

"Oh."

Beat.

"John made flowers. Out of spaghetti. Once."

If they are talking about magic--

"It... turned into flowers?"

It sounds like the kind of illusion Candice might do.

"Yes."

Beat.

"Billy does magic, too. I do not know if he has practiced."

Hmm.

"I don't think gods have to practice."

X thinks about that.

"That does not make sense."

"They're gods."

She's read stories about gods being tricked or hurt, but not about practicing, or getting something like that wrong.

"I think they just - do things."

"Oh."

X absorbs this.

"That is useful."

Beat.

"For them."

Understatement.

"Yeah."

Well, it is.

"They're not like - people."

X tilts her head a little.

"Humans?"

X's definition of people is weird.

"Yeah."

"And everything else."

... ever.

"Oh."

Beat.

"I will remember."

Even if it still does not make sense.

It happens.

With a small shrug, "I don't know what they do here."

"I do not, either."

Beat.

"Sometmes Belar turns other people into things. When they cause trouble."

Or so the Security report reads. If X knew Raph, she would ask him. Maybe she'll ask Jayne, instead.

"They - can do that?"

She sounds a little wary, now. Elle only knew about the cells.

X frowns, considering.

"He turns them back. Sometimes it is easier than fighting."

Beat.

"And safer. For other people."

"I... guess."

She still sounds rather unsure about it.

But when it comes down to it, were she ever going to cause trouble in the bar, she'd be unlikely to really think it through.

X is quiet for a second. Or two.

"I cannot do that. To people."

Change their shape, that is. You know, in case Elle was worried.

"I do not think other people can, either."

Except gods. And--maybe Constantine and Tom?

"I know."

Beat.

"It's okay."
