noteful: (z balloons for Laura's birthday)

Birthday Party for Laura/X-23

It's a pretty low-key party, all things considered, and not significantly different than the one Parker or Meg would have thrown in a dorm room for a friend at home, not-exactly-traditional menu not withstanding.

There's music, low enough to talk over (and maybe with a little more folk in the mix than one expects to find a party). Balloons and streamers in purple and blue and red. A place to leave presents. People to meet or catch up with.

And, most importantly, a chance to wish X-23 (or Laura) a very happy birthday.

"There are no hats."

She does not seem downcast about this.

"Or flashing lights. And it is not very loud."

X has been to clubs before. This is different.

Better.

Parker nods.

"We wanted to put together a party that you would enjoy. Since it's your birthday."

"And we didn't really think you'd like those kinds of things."

The point of throwing a party for someone is to throw a party that they will like.

"I do not mind them," X says.

It's true.

That does not mean she is upset they are not around.

Sometimes having preferences is still new. A little.

"There are things you like? For your birthday?"

"My family usually did something outside for my birthdays. It's in the spring, so it's easy to do. But mine were always pretty standard."

Parker sips her soda.

"The birthday garlic bread turned out better than I thought it would."

X thinks about this for a second.

Then--

"I do not know what is standard."

Shouldn't she know? In case--

In case a birthday party is a mission?

"Well, what I think of as standard," Parker says, grinning.

"The truth is, there's really no such thing as standard. Or possibly many different standards. People celebrate different ways."

"I'm personally really digging the Italian dinner set-up we have going here."

"It is good."

X seems very sure of that.

"Pixie likes clubs."

Beat.

"At home."
parkerlee: (Small Smile)

"I remember you talking about Pixie."

"She likes to dance?" Parker asks.

"Yes."

Beat.

"She likes people. Crowds."

X half-shrugs.

"And loud music."

Just wait until Dazzler's concert. Pixie is already ridiculously excited.

X considers this.

"You are not as loud."

Beat.

"Or pink."

"I've mellowed."

Laura should have seen her in high school.

"But I do like hitting the dance clubs every now and then."

"Dancing is fun."

X does not look shifty, just awkward.

"I do not dance much."

Beat.

"It is not like fighting."

Except when it is. But--

"Depends on the sort of dancing," Parker laughs.

"Well, granted, I don't know much about fighting, but I think a lot of the same principles apply. I requires a certain degree of grace."

"Oh."

X considers that.

Carefully.

No mission has ever required it.

"There are all kinds of dancing."

"Regular social dancing--what you do in clubs. Ballet. Flamenco--that's what I take. Ballroom dancing."

"If you decide to learn, you might enjoy starting with something like ballroom. There are specific steps to the dances. A formula almost. It might help to ease you into it."

X falls silent.

There are probably classes offered somewhere near her neighborhood. It's like that.

That last bit leaves X looking a little dubious.

"Okay."

Beat.

"I do that already. Exercise."

X's dubious look does not fade.

But, eventually--

"Okay."

Beat.

"Maybe it will be useful."

Somehow. Someday.

Who knows?
