Birthday Party for Laura/X-23

It's a pretty low-key party, all things considered, and not significantly different than the one Parker or Meg would have thrown in a dorm room for a friend at home, not-exactly-traditional menu not withstanding.

There's music, low enough to talk over (and maybe with a little more folk in the mix than one expects to find a party). Balloons and streamers in purple and blue and red. A place to leave presents. People to meet or catch up with.

And, most importantly, a chance to wish X-23 (or Laura) a very happy birthday.

"Happy Birthday!"

Zoe is thrilled that she finally found other doors to Milliways and was able to attend the party without dealing with her father.

X looks up, head tilting as she studies Zoe.

She seems--pleased, insofar as X's expressions are readable.

"Zoe. Thank you."

Beat.

"You are having a good time?"

This phrase is easier to say with practice. And tonight it's getting quite a workout.

"Definitely," Zoe says. "It's a really nice party. Are you enjoying yourself?"

"Yes," X says. Promptly.

"The food is good."

Beat.

"And it is not very loud. The music."

Plus, no flashing lights. Someone's X-men friends have been really into clubs lately.

It's a problem.

Zoe nods. "It's too hard to talk when the music is loud."

X nods, just a little.

"It is harder to hear other things, too. Like footsteps."

She's not a fan of being snuck up on, either.

"You do not like it, either?"

Loud music, that is. X is curious.

"It all depends," Zoe says with a shrug. "For something like this, no."

X tilts her head a little, weighing this.

"You have been to--"

She pauses, double-checking her terminology.

"Clubs?"

"A few," Zoe says. "My dad doesn't know, of course."

There's a momentary silence. Then--

"You like them?"

"They can be fun."

X gives it a moment.

"You like dancing?"

"Definitely! Don't you?"

Zoe can't imagine not liking to dance.

X offers a one-shouldered shrug.

"I do not dance much."

Beat.

"It is not like fighting."

"No, it's not," Zoe agrees. "We totally need to go clubbing some night. It'll be fun!"

She's silent for a second or two, studying Zoe.

And then--

"Okay."

Beat.

"There are many clubs in San Francisco. If you wanted to go."

Plus it would be easier to avoid SARAH and the Sheriff. Probably. X thinks ahead.

Zoe nods. "That would be excellent. And OH! Did I tell you? I finally found a door to Milliways that isn't SARAH."

There's another momentary pause, then--

"That is useful."

She seems pleased.

Beat.

"And it is easily accessible? For you?"
