Birthday Party for Laura/X-23

It's a pretty low-key party, all things considered, and not significantly different than the one Parker or Meg would have thrown in a dorm room for a friend at home, not-exactly-traditional menu not withstanding.

There's music, low enough to talk over (and maybe with a little more folk in the mix than one expects to find a party). Balloons and streamers in purple and blue and red. A place to leave presents. People to meet or catch up with.

And, most importantly, a chance to wish X-23 (or Laura) a very happy birthday.

Alanna, being short, has no problem with the streamers, other than the fact she's not entirely sure what they are for. She has the oddest urge to jump up and try to grab one. This is what she's contemplating when a movement in her peripheral vision, Sam leaning against the same wall she's holding up, distracts her.

"Hullo."

"Hey, Alanna." Sam grins at her. "It's been a while."

Probably longer than he thinks. For her, anyway.

"It really has. How are you?" Beat. "And Dean?"

"Not bad," Sam says easily. "Although he's missing out tonight."

"Yes. It's a nice party," says Alanna.

Did you catch the yellow-eyed demon, Sam? Alanna doesn't say. Seven years or not, some things stick with you.

"X has a lot of friends." She smiles his way.

"She really, really does."

He sounds a little bit -- surprised? Overwhelmed? It's hard to say, but there's something almost fervent about the sincerity in his words.

"She isn't afraid to say what she means," she points out conversationally, glancing down at her drink. "That's something I prize in a person."

A sudden grin.

"So much so I recruited her for security."

"Oh, so you were the one," he says, with a quick smile.

"Guilty. Mike very nearly confused her into saying no, but it all worked out."

In retrospect, Alanna knows she should have just told X-23 she was hired and handed her a badge rather than have her check with Mike for approval. Old habits die hard.

"He did, huh?"

A beat.

"He have some reason for not wanting her on the job?"

"Not at all. He was thrilled. But Mike is Mike, and X is, well, literal. I think the confusion was mutual."

Alanna gives a fond smile and shake of her head.

"In any case, she did me a huge favor. I haven't been around much," she admits, frowning slightly.

"Yeah, I haven't seen you in a while," he observes.

"Seven years for one of us," Alanna notes. Absently, she traces a fine line beside her eye with an index finger. "I'm told it was only a few weeks here. Now we're having some trouble at home, so I can't visit as much as I would like."
