Birthday Party for Laura/X-23

It's a pretty low-key party, all things considered, and not significantly different than the one Parker or Meg would have thrown in a dorm room for a friend at home, not-exactly-traditional menu not withstanding.

There's music, low enough to talk over (and maybe with a little more folk in the mix than one expects to find a party). Balloons and streamers in purple and blue and red. A place to leave presents. People to meet or catch up with.

And, most importantly, a chance to wish X-23 (or Laura) a very happy birthday.

Sam has both hands shoved in his pockets, and is currently leaning against a wall out of the way of the dangling streamers.

He's tall enough that he has to duck them when moving around, so this is kind of like taking a break before he wanders back into the crowd.

(And off her crutches.)

"Sam, hi.

"I don't think I knew that you knew Laura."

"I guess it never came up," he says. "But yeah, we've talked a few times."

"Nice party."

A smile with a just very slightly smug edge to it.

"How's your arm?"

"Okay, I guess."

Sam gives her a quick once-over, followed by a rueful smile.

"I see you're off the crutches. I'm guessing I don't need to ask how your ankle's doing, huh?"

"It's getting better. I still have to be careful, but I'm really, really glad to be rid of the crutches.

"Other than that, how have you been?"

"I can imagine. Crutches would drive me crazy pretty quick."

Not to mention how much of a problem they'd be in his and Dean's work, but that's beside the point.

"Pretty good. You? And, um, can I get you punch, or something?"

Dangling streamers are among the many decorations that Elle is really trying to not stare at.

Okay, she's not trying that hard. But she hasn't been shooting them down, either. And at some point, when she's pulling her gaze away from them, it falls to Sam, instead.

She doesn't glare at him. (He hasn't done anything to bother her in the last five minutes, after all.)

It's mild enough, anyway, and his smile's disarmingly friendly.

Elle doesn't smile back. But it's only because her expression doesn't change.

"Hi," she echoes.



"You know X."

It's not a question, nor surprised or suspicious. But she can't think of anything else to say, and right now, it ranks among the few things she actually knows about him.

A beat.

"She's pretty nice."

She's not disagreeing, but she doesn't know what Sam means by that. Elle doesn't usually qualify how she feels about people by whether they're 'nice.'

Alanna, being short, has no problem with the streamers, other than the fact she's not entirely sure what they are for. She has the oddest urge to jump up and try to grab one. This is what she's contemplating when a movement in her peripheral vision, Sam leaning against the same wall she's holding up, distracts her.

"Hullo."

"Hey, Alanna." Sam grins at her. "It's been a while."

Probably longer than he thinks. For her, anyway.

"It really has. How are you?" Beat. "And Dean?"

"Not bad," Sam says easily. "Although he's missing out tonight."

"Yes. It's a nice party," says Alanna.

Did you catch the yellow-eyed demon, Sam? Alanna doesn't say. Seven years or not, some things stick with you.

"X has a lot of friends." She smiles his way.

There's only one particularly low-hanging streamer that menaces Kate as she's walking by, but when she glances over immediately after passing under it, she gets the feeling she understands why the guy by the wall is... well, by the wall.

She nods his way. "Looks like you're strategically placed."

"Or, you know, not tangled up in things," Sam says, wryly. "Goes with the territory, though."

Cal, who stands at six foot five, feels his pain on that.

He also does not often see anyone who's damn near as tall as he is. This is obviously something to bond over.

Plus, he's pretty sure he knows who this is.

"Hi," he says. "You must be Sam. X mentioned you."

The sole descriptor: tall like you.

Chances are good.

"Cal Chandler." He smiles, with the ease of a lot of social interaction, and offers a hand to shake.

"Hi," he says, meeting Cal's hand with his own. "Sam, as you know; the last name's Winchester. Nice to meet you."

He grins.

"Us tall guys have to stick together."

"Isn't that the truth. We are few and far between." Relatively speaking, anyway.
