Birthday Party for Laura/X-23

It's a pretty low-key party, all things considered, and not significantly different than the one Parker or Meg would have thrown in a dorm room for a friend at home, not-exactly-traditional menu not withstanding.

There's music, low enough to talk over (and maybe with a little more folk in the mix than one expects to find a party). Balloons and streamers in purple and blue and red. A place to leave presents. People to meet or catch up with.

And, most importantly, a chance to wish X-23 (or Laura) a very happy birthday.

"I would be happy to."

No doubt about it. Stepping out of Heaven on occasion does wonders for one's social calendar.

"What are you drinking?" he asks curiously, looking at the odd mixture in the glass.

"It's a root beer float." She shows him. "See? It's ice cream in the glass, and then you pour the root beer over it. It's good."

"Very inventive."

Humans have developed the ability to do some amazing things with food.

"I thought ice cream came in cones."

"Oh, it does. But you can have ice cream in lots of different ways. Is there not ice cream in heaven?"

Ooh. If not, then that is sad, sad, sad.

"We do not eat."

That would be a 'no.'

At least, not for angels.

"Oh. I'm so sad for you."

Castiel looks at her quizzically.

"Why?" he asks.

"Because you don't have ice cream! It's the best thing to eat in the whole world."

Castiel smiles a bit at the exuberance.

"I can eat. When I am in this form," he says. "I do not have to to stay alive. But it helps me to...blend in. And to accept hospitality."

At least at one time, hospitality toward strangers--the offering of food and drink--had been an important custom among humans.

Lest one be entertaining angels unawares.

"What is it that makes ice cream the best thing to eat in the world?"

"It's sweet and it's cold and it makes me happy."

"Those would seem to be valid reasons."

Castiel is not entirely immune to sweets. In the past when he walked the Earth in a human vessel, he had had quite a fondness for honey.

There were fewer options for a sugar fix back then.

"Perhaps I will have to try it."

As Meg had said, change (and by extension, trying new things) is good.

"You haven't had it before????"

She grabs his hand and drags him over to the table where the ice cream is.

"Here, I'll scoop you some right now. You have to eat some."

She takes a plate and messily scoops the ice cream onto it.

"It would be better if it was chocolate, but vanilla is okay. It's still ice cream."

Castiel allows himself to be dragged over to the buffet table, not even putting up a mild protest.

Clearly, this is considered a vital part of human education. Ice cream.

He has to admit, he is curious. Ice cream is something that humans seem to almost universally enjoy. He would eat some just to make Ingress happy, but it's also good to be able to satisfy curiosity.

Castiel accepts the plate with its lopsided scoops of ice cream and the spoon that Ingress thrusts at him. Very deliberately, with a See? I'm trying it. look at Ingress, he scoops up a large spoonful and deposits it in his mouth.

She is right. It is very sweet.

And VERY cold.

Castiel is not generally troubled by pain when he is in a human vessel. Mostly because he knows how to deflect it. It it probably due to the fact that he had not anticipated it that the ice cream hitting the roof of his mouth leaves him feeling like a very small demon is attempting to poke his vessel's eyeballs out of their sockets from the inside.

"Oh...my. That is very cold," he gets out.

"If you eat it too fast, your throat will freeze," she warns, "but it warms up fast."

She finishes her root beer float so she can make another.

Castiel nods mutely.

Fortunately the pain seems to be receding rapidly as temperatures even out.

(Delicate pieces of engineering, human bodies.)

He takes a smaller bite of the ice cream this time. It goes better.

"It is good," he admits.

"See? I told you."

Poor angels. They miss out on all the fun! Well, not Castiel. Not with Ingress helping!

"You know a great deal," Castiel says.

You don't have to be very old to be a font of information.

"I'm a smart kid!"

She giggles. This was not a statement made in a sassy way.
