Birthday Party for Laura/X-23

It's a pretty low-key party, all things considered, and not significantly different than the one Parker or Meg would have thrown in a dorm room for a friend at home, not-exactly-traditional menu not withstanding.

There's music, low enough to talk over (and maybe with a little more folk in the mix than one expects to find a party). Balloons and streamers in purple and blue and red. A place to leave presents. People to meet or catch up with.

And, most importantly, a chance to wish X-23 (or Laura) a very happy birthday.

Meghan is extremely helpful.

There is a radio communication device with a looming red button, with an accompanying sign.

Want to talk to a house? Press the button.

Because SARAH can only somewhat come to the party girl, X meets her halfway.

Which is to say, since she has seen this communication device before, X approaches and pushes the red button.

"SARAH."

Beat.

"You are okay?"

She would ask about having a good time, but the words aren't that easy for her yet. Maybe next time.

"I am. Hello."

The voice is much tinnier than it normally is if someone is closer to the house.

"Happy birthday.

"I didn't get you a present."

"That is okay," X says. "You are here."

Well--insofar as a house can be somewhere not-the-house.

"Thank you."

Beat.

"People have been talking? To you."

"Yes. Meghan checks on me often, and others have been very nice. Or curious, I am not sure which."

X considers this for a moment. Silently.

"It is okay to be both?"

Beat.

"They are not afraid of me. They will like you, too."

X has no idea. None.

"I never found you scary."

The red button draws Alanna's attention like a beacon on a dark night. Curiosity gets the better of her and besides, it's better than standing around looking uncomfortable.

It might be a trick, or a joke; if she doesn't press it she'll never find out. So she does, keeping her back to the center of the room.

She doesn't say anything afterward, however, not having much experience with such devices. But she does clear her throat.

Someone's paging her.

"Hello?" It sounds like a woman on the end of the line, unless you've been to Eureka before and met a man named Douglas Fargo.

"Hello?"

Alanna's voice is raspy and pitched low out of habit to sound more or less like a young man.

"I'm not sure-"

Trailing off, she squints again at the sign. It doesn't help much.

"This is SARAH. I was unable to attend the party physically so Meghan allowed for an alternate method of communication.

"Who is this?"

"Ah! Like a telephone. I remember those from London."

Pleased, Alanna beams down at the device.

"I'm Sir Alanna of Olau."

Some quick calculations.

"I could not locate an Olau on any current atlas I have. You are not from Earth. How do you know London?"

Um.

Elle gives the sign a blank look, before carefully pressing down on the button.

"... SARAH?"

"Hello Elle. How have you been lately? I do not think I knew you were friends with X-23."

Elle takes a moment to think about this.

"We were at that thing where you showed that ... game," she answers. Helpfully.

"Yes.

"That doesn't mean you are friends, though. Unless I am mistaken."

Elle shrugs.

It doesn't occur to her that SARAH wouldn't be able to see that.

"I don't know what that would mean." It sounds like she's agreeing with SARAH.

It's a little too subtle for SARAH to comprehend without being able to see Elle.

"Did you get X-23 a present?"

Meg pushes the red button.

"Good evening, SARAH. Is everything working okay? Can you hear everyone?"

"Oh yes, the location sounds to be extremely centralized. It is appreciated.

"Is everyone having a good time? Is X-23 socializing?"

Y'know. As she does.

"Good.

"And, yes, I think they are. And a lot of people came and Laura is talking to them, so, yes, she's socializing."

She must. If Laura didn't socialize, this party would have three people and a small plate of pasta.

"I was happy to hear she had so many friends in Milliways."

"Yes. Me, too. She deserves it.

"I didn't really know how many people to expect.

"Can you see any of it, or just hear?"

"Just hear.

"It takes time to manufacture any sort of visual input system," SARAH offers as explanation.
