Birthday Party for Laura/X-23

It's a pretty low-key party, all things considered, and not significantly different than the one Parker or Meg would have thrown in a dorm room for a friend at home, not-exactly-traditional menu not withstanding.

There's music, low enough to talk over (and maybe with a little more folk in the mix than one expects to find a party). Balloons and streamers in purple and blue and red. A place to leave presents. People to meet or catch up with.

And, most importantly, a chance to wish X-23 (or Laura) a very happy birthday.

Her smile goes from apologetic to companionably secretive in about three seconds flat.

"Probably only to someone who's done their share of pacing, I figure."

"I like space."

And not a lot of people, though admittedly that's gotten much worse recently. It comes from too much time at court. She has no idea how Jon does it.

With a quick look around, she adds, "Maybe if we pace together it will look less impatient and more... normal?"

"I like not sitting still," she admits, and then she grins to the point of laughing. "It's worth a try."

Glass of lemonade in her hand, she turns slightly so she can fall into step at will.

"I'm Kate."

She figures it's nice to know who you're pacing with.

She's right.

"Alanna." She rolls her shoulders back and visibly relaxes when they start moving. Her legs are short, but she's cultivated a longer than expected, masculine stride. "Nice to meet you, Kate. As parties go, it's not bad. I'm actually enjoying myself more than I thought I would."

Given her expectations, that's not really saying much.

It's definitely the eyes that seem the most unusual about Alanna, and Kate's been here long enough that she's no longer willing to just assume that kind of thing is the work of contacts.

"Not a big party person?" She has to agree: "It's not so bad, is it? Kind of cozy, lots of personal touches." She grins a little. "It's definitely my first experience with birthday garlic bread."

No, contacts aren't responsible for her eye color, though she's been asked that often enough here in the past. At home, there are superstitions as to what they mean, but even Tortallans can find her gaze unsettling.

It helps that they clash a bit with her hair.

"I'm really not," Alanna laughs. "But I need to remember that parties here aren't full of politics and formal dancing the way they are at home."

She glances at the food table.

"Is that what it is? Odd."

"It's pretty good." She follows Alanna's gaze toward the food. "Definitely worth a try if you haven't already."

It just looks kind of funny with birthday candles in it. She's definitely leaving this party with a better idea of what Laura likes than she had when she came in.

"So formal dancing and politics, huh? What kind of place is it you're from?"

That makes two of them, though Alanna can't quite figure out what X has against cake. In the spirit of trying new things, however, she veers toward the birthday garlic bread.

"Tortall." She waves her hand in the air, searching for a word she hasn't used in a long time. "I've been told it's like the medieval era on Earth. Swords, horses, code of chivalry -- that sort of thing. I'm a knight."
