Birthday Party for Laura/X-23

It's a pretty low-key party, all things considered, and not significantly different than the one Parker or Meg would have thrown in a dorm room for a friend at home, not-exactly-traditional menu not withstanding.

There's music, low enough to talk over (and maybe with a little more folk in the mix than one expects to find a party). Balloons and streamers in purple and blue and red. A place to leave presents. People to meet or catch up with.

And, most importantly, a chance to wish X-23 (or Laura) a very happy birthday.

X relaxes. Fractionally.

"He changed you back?"

It certainly looks like he did. So maybe that is okay.

"... I was a bird."

So. Yes.

X considers this.

Carefully.

"You liked it? Being a bird."

"I - liked flying."

Pause.

"Without someone else doing it."

"I have not done that. But Angel flies."

Beat.

"He is my teammate. He has wings."

She nods.

"People fly in my world, too. But they don't have wings."

"People do not always have wings in my world."

Beat.

"Storm uses the wind. And Julian is telekinetic. He lifts himself."

"No one just... flies?"

Telekinesis is different, and can't do what flying really can. And she's not too sure about that 'wind' thing.

"I--"

X is quiet, running through her mental databanks.

"Some people do who are not mutants."

Like the Sentry. And--stuff. X does not know them.

"Then... how do they do it?"

That makes even less sense.

"Some of them are aliens," X says, after a long moment of thought.

"And Iron Man has a suit."

Beat.

"I do not know about the others. Maybe it is magic. I did not ask."

She has never met them to ask, either.

She shakes her head.

"They don't have anything else, in my world. And they're not aliens. It's what they do."

"Oh."

X considers this.

"It is useful? For them."

Elle shrugs.

When it comes down to it, the person the flying person she's had the most experience with is West Rosen.

And she is so not talking about that right now.

Instead, she just says, "I like what I do."

"I like what I do, too."

Beat.

"It is useful."

And that is important, right?

"Yeah."

"I think it's different from being a bird, though."

There's no wings, first of all.

"You would be smaller."

Beat.

"As a bird."

X is not sure she would like that.

"It was a big one."

And Elle's pretty used to being small, anyway.

"Oh."

Beat.

"That is good."

This pause is longer.

"I do not know any bird shapeshifters. At home."

"It doesn't happen where I'm from, either."

Uh.

We'll assume.

"I - think it's like magic?"

X frowns a little.

"Maybe."

Beat.

"I am not good at magic."

"I don't do it."

Pause. "But it was like - when Tom turned something into a bird. It just happened."

Of course, Tom needed a wand. She's not sure how relevant that is.

"Oh."

Beat.

"John made flowers. Out of spaghetti. Once."

If they are talking about magic--

"It... turned into flowers?"

It sounds like the kind of illusion Candice might do.

"Yes."

Beat.

"Billy does magic, too. I do not know if he has practiced."
