Birthday Party for Laura/X-23

It's a pretty low-key party, all things considered, and not significantly different than the one Parker or Meg would have thrown in a dorm room for a friend at home, not-exactly-traditional menu not withstanding.

There's music, low enough to talk over (and maybe with a little more folk in the mix than one expects to find a party). Balloons and streamers in purple and blue and red. A place to leave presents. People to meet or catch up with.

And, most importantly, a chance to wish X-23 (or Laura) a very happy birthday.

Flat | Top-Level Comments Only

It's a strange way to phrase it.

Pause.

"There's the - sky one. He's fine."

That's a good way to say 'doesn't annoy or try to hurt you,' right?

X tilts her head, considering this, too.

Then--

"I do not know him."

Beat.

"He flies?"

Pause.

"When he's a bird."

"Oh. He is a shapeshifter."

Beat.

"I did not know."

She shrugs one shoulder.

"Gods - do that a lot. In the stories."

"I do not know the stories."

Beat.

"I do not think Allah changes shape."

Hmm. It is something else to ask Sooraya. Or maybe X will find a book.

"There's... different kinds."

Elle has read some of these stories, but she's not the best person to explain it.

"He's - they're from a different - kind of them, I think."

"There are books?"

Beat.

"I have not--"

She gets quiet for a second.

"I do not know much. About gods."

"Yeah. My Dad has them - in his office."

Her shoulders tighten into something not quite a shrug.

"I used to read them."

X's eyes narrow. Just a little.

"Oh."

Beat.

"I will ask bar."

What she doesn't ask--

If Elle is okay. Sometimes it is better not to say anything.

X is trying to learn.

"She'd probably have them, too," Elle agrees, with no stiffness or particular tone to her voice.

"They - change other people, too."

X's eyes narrow, sudden and sharp.

"He did not try to change you?"

It's important.

Pause.

"I said he could."

X relaxes. Fractionally.

"He changed you back?"

It certainly looks like he did. So maybe that is okay.

"... I was a bird."

So. Yes.

X considers this.

Carefully.

"You liked it? Being a bird."

"I - liked flying."

Pause.

"Without someone else doing it."

"I have not done that. But Angel flies."

Beat.

"He is my teammate. He has wings."

She nods.

"People fly in my world, too. But they don't have wings."

"People do not always have wings in my world."

Beat.

"Storm uses the wind. And Julian is telekinetic. He lifts himself."

"No one just... flies?"

Telekinesis is different, and can't do what flying really can. And she's not too sure about that 'wind' thing.

"I--"

X is quiet, running through her mental databanks.

"Some people do who are not mutants."

Like the Sentry. And--stuff. X does not know them.

"Then... how do they do it?"

That makes even less sense.

"Some of them are aliens," X says, after a long moment of thought.

"And Iron Man has a suit."

Beat.

"I do not know about the others. Maybe it is magic. I did not ask."

She has never met them to ask, either.

She shakes her head.

"They don't have anything else, in my world. And they're not aliens. It's what they do."
