Birthday Party for Laura/X-23

It's a pretty low-key party, all things considered, and not significantly different than the one Parker or Meg would have thrown in a dorm room for a friend at home, not-exactly-traditional menu not withstanding.

There's music, low enough to talk over (and maybe with a little more folk in the mix than one expects to find a party). Balloons and streamers in purple and blue and red. A place to leave presents. People to meet or catch up with.

And, most importantly, a chance to wish X-23 (or Laura) a very happy birthday.

He winces.

"... I can see why you and Meg get along."

X looks blank.

"I do not need casts."

Beat.

"And she is not a mutant."

Someone here does not understand.

"Which is why she did," he explains. "And she's already out of hers."

"Oh."

Beat.

"You are sure you are healing?"

"Yeah, I'm healing. Just slowly, I guess."

Sam glares at the cast as if it's personally offended him.

"If it takes too much longer, I'm cutting this thing off myself."

"I will help," X says, after a moment.

"The angle is not good. For you."

Or, you know, there is an infirmary. With doctors. Who are trained.

Startled, he gives her a quick grin nevertheless.

"You know, I just might take you up on that."

Even if Dean'd probably never let him hear the end of it.

"I will be careful," X says.

Reassuringly.

"If you ask."

"As opposed to slicing into my arm? Believe me, I'll ask."

There is a moment where X looks bewildered.

Then--

"Oh."

Beat.

"You have been busy? At home."

"Same old routine," he says, easily enough. "How about you?"

"The aliens are gone."

Beat.

"And Rahne woke up."

"Rahne was your friend who was ... sick, right?"

Sam looks concerned.

"How's she doing?"

"She does not remember what happened. Most of it."

Beat.

"But we know where to go, now. Angel will be back soon. He flies."

This pause is longer.

"It is useful for reconnaissance."

"I'd guess so."

Sam hesitates for a second, then adds,

"Sounds like you've got a lot of help...?"

"I am the help," X says.

"I am an auxiliary member. Of X-Force."

Beat.

"I did not want to stay. All the time."

"Right, it's just--"

Time to take another tack.

"Nevermind. So you come here instead?"

"Sometimes."

X shrugs.

"I work. Here. And I have friends."

She pauses for a moment, studying him.

"You come here on purpose?"

"Sometimes," he says, with a quick grin as he echoes her choice of words.

"But you have not been Bound," X says.

That seems to happen when people come accidentally.

Sometimes.

"No." A grim expression crosses his face, making him look suddenly harder and more dangerous.

"And I better not be, either."

X stays very still.

"Some people do not get Bound."

Beat.

"It is okay."

"As long as it stays that way."

A beat, and another quick smile.

"But hey, let's talk about something more, you know, birthday like. You having fun?"

X is silent for a few minutes, considering this.

"Yes."

She seems very certain about that.

"I like the music. The food is good, too."

X has very--distinct taste.

"And I like talking to my friends."
