Fourteen Days

The after Meg talks to Paul, she gets a new blue notebook and she writes down everything she can remember -- what he said and how he said it, guessing at spellings of names, when she has to. She tries not to editorialize. She somewhat succeeds.

On day 2, she gets another notebook and she writes it all down again, this time in French.

On day 3, she compares her two accounts and finds that there really isn't much difference. She's not sure if she was expecting there to be or not.

On day 4, she goes outside and she walks until her fingers are numb, and her toes, and then she walks a little longer.

On day 5, she reads back over both accounts. They have not changed.

On day 6, she finds the library, and she pulls books off the shelves almost at random, not sure what she's looking for, or how she'll know if she finds it, anyway.

On day 7, she writes it all down again, in English, and adds what she can remember of what Kim told her in Ontario.

On day 8, she goes back to the library. She still doesn't find anything.

On day 9, she stays in bed, reading Jane of Lantern Hill.

On day 10, she writes it all down once again, starting at the end and working backwards.

On day 11, she tries to write down all the questions she has, in yet another notebook, and in a neat and orderly fashion.

On day 12, she gives up. There are too many questions, most of which she doesn't know how to ask, and none of which are neat and orderly.

On day 13, she stares at the wall for a while, and then she tears a sheet of paper out of the back of one of the notebooks, and she writes, "K, We should talk. M"

And on day 14, she goes back downstairs.
